Saturna Elementary is a two room school on one of the most beautiful islands in the world.

History of Saturna Island

The name Saturna comes from Spanish explorers who first arrived on the island in 1791 in the Saturnina sailing ship. Originally inhabited by Canada’s aboriginal people, the island grew as pioneers settled in the late 1800s. When the quarry closed in the mid 1960s, the island’s population began to cultivate orchards and raise sheep. The first school was built in 1919, and a post office followed soon after.
